The New Zealand Ice Cream Awards has attained its Platinum Anniversary - twenty years of competition.
It all began in 1997 with 61 entries from just 7 Ice Cream companies - Tip
Top Ice Cream, Deep South, Mel-O-Rich, Westland
Snowflake, Kapiti Cheeses, Chateau Créme Delight, and Talleys
Frozen.
There were six categories judged by two overseas judges, with three children
judging the Kids Choice category. The first Supreme Award was awarded to Mel-O-Rich of
Wellington for their 1st Choice Boysenberry Ripple.
Fast forward to the 20th Awards in 2016 judged at the Food Innovation Centre,
Auckland during the first week in May. Eight judges took 2 full days to judge
334 entries entered by 37 companies and individuals.
This year the Supreme Award for a Large Manufacturer was won by:
Tip
Top Ice Cream
for
their Tip
Top Hokey Pokey Ice Cream

This is the second consecutive year that Tip Top Ice Cream has won the Supreme Award for a large manufacturer with an entry in the Standard
Ice Cream category. The judges' comments described this all-time favourite as "very
creamy, excellent body, good flavour with perfect sweetness balance".
Tip Top Ice Cream also won Best in Category for their Tip
Top Vanilla Ice Cream in the Standard Vanilla Ice Cream category.
The Supreme Award for a Boutique Manufacturer went to:
Puhoi
Valley Cafe
for
their Matakana Roasted Coffee Affogato Ice Cream

This is also the second consecutive year that an entry in the Premium
Ice Cream category by Puhoi Valley Cafe has won both the Premium Ice Cream Category as well as the Supreme Award for a Boutique Manufacturer. This year it was an espresso coffee flavour that was a hit with the judges and last year their chai latte flavoured ice cream won the Award.
The
flavour for this year's "Best
of" category was Caramel.
Judges were treated to salted caramel, Witherspoon caramel, chocolate coated
caramel and ripples of all of these. With 34 entries across all product types
(ice cream, gelatos, sorbets), the judges selected an ice cream - Awesome
Salted Caramel Seduction Ice Cream made by Much Moore Ice
Cream Co. Ltd as the winner of this year's Best of Caramel category.
The categories which attracted the largest number of entries were Premium
Ice Cream with 65 entries, Gelato with 49 entries and Sorbet with 51 entries.
Judging involved awarding points for a number of key attributes in different properties. Appearance was worth 10 points, Body
and Texture - 40 points, and Flavour - 50 points. Gold Awards were given to entries with more than 95 points, Silver Awards to those between 90 and 95 points.
Talley's
Group Limited won Best in Category for
the Premium
Vanilla Ice Cream category with their Premium Vanilla (pictured

In the Gelato category, Gelato 2U based in the Hawkes Bay scooped the Best
in Category with an Espresso Gelato.
The Best in Category for the Sorbet category was awarded to Carrello
del Gelato from Wellington for their Feijoa Sorbet, which also won this Award in 2014.
There were 74 entries in this year's "New to Market" category for products new to retail in the last 12 months. The winner of the Best
New to Market Award was Puhoi Valley Cafe with another scoop for their Matakana
Roasted Coffee Affogato Ice Cream.
In the Export Ice Cream category New Zealand Natural
Chocolate Obsession won the Best in Category.
The Kids Choice category was judged by twelve 7-11 year olds from Ramarama
School in the Franklin District. They used a "Yuk to Yum" scale and any point in between. The kids chose a bubble gum flavoured ice cream called New
Zealand Natural Rainbow made by New Zealand Natural as the winner of the Kids Choice category.
There was only one Gold Award in each section of the Open Creative categories
for ice cream and gelato/sorbet.
Judges were looking for creativity as well as
a perfectly made product. The winner across the two sections of the Open Creative
category was a Lot Eight Yuzu Indulgence Gelato which
was made by Gelissimo
Gelato of Wellington. This gelato was subtlety flavoured with Yuzu infused
olive oil
and had a creamy smooth texture.
The Low Fat category was won by Much Moore Ice Cream
Co. Ltd with their Awesome Strawberry Yoghurt.
2016 was a record year for the Ice Cream Awards - more than a 400% increase in
entries over 20 years. This competition is now the largest to be held in Australasia - which
is a real testimony to the quality, creativity and commitment of New Zealand
Ice Cream, Gelato and Sorbet manufacturers and their dedication to quality.
